Fans of the Man Without Fear cracked open the champagne when Marvel Studios announced Daredevil: Born Again. As excited as they are about Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock getting a starring role in an MCU adventure after his appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, there’s still a huge hurdle to get over.
Netflix’s Daredevil is generally considered the best of streaming service’s Defenders Saga, delivering incredibly choreographed action and a satisfyingly mature approach distinct from most MCU fare. Of course, Daredevil: Born Again won’t be a sequel or fourth season of that show, it’s instead a soft reboot and “re-imagining” of the character.
Now, some fans have pronounced it “doomed to fail” as it can’t possibly live up to the Netflix series:
Fans are skeptical about a more “light-hearted” MCU version:
Should we start lowering our expectations now?
Perhaps more optimistically, it’s also fair that Cox’s MCU appearances so far have all been great:
And are we just judging this show too early on limited information?
We’ll only know for sure when it airs, though the fact that Marvel Studios is confident enough in the character to give it an 18-episode first season – far longer than every other Disney Plus MCU show to date – must be a good sign. With shooting now underway, we’re hoping to get a peek behind-the-scenes to see how it’s going before the trailer lands.
Whatever else happens, Daredevil: Born Again has some mighty big shoes to fill.
