The confident – and often cocky – Defender struggled to leave much of an impression on fans during Iron Fist season 1, after critics and viewers called out the show for its slow pace and weak storytelling. So whereas DaredevilJessica Jones and Luke Cage had all performed relatively well throughout their standalone series, Danny Rand soon became the odd one out for Netflix and Marvel Television.

Season 2 hopes to change all that though with a leaner episode count and well-rounded characters – lead star Finn Jones (Danny Rand) has even told us that Iron Fist‘s sophomore solo outing will be unlike anything we’ve seen before. And while we’re still not sure if that’ll be true, the first trailer (seen above) certainly has us excited.

Admittedly, the initial preview for season 1 was pretty enticing as well, so we won’t rush to any final judgements, but we definitely like what we see here, with the brief amount of footage we get teasing some blistering fight choreography, a badass looking Danny and a dangerous new threat. Whether the producers can stick the landing and pull off a better second season remains to be seen, but for now, you can consider us intrigued.

Following showrunner Scott Buck’s double-whammy of flops in Iron Fist season 1 and Inhumans, he’ll be replaced for season 2 by Sleepy Hollow‘s Raven Metzner, who’s apparently bringing an expert knowledge of the comics and a passion for martial arts movies to the table. Fingers crossed then that he can improve upon where the show stumbled in its rookie year and deliver a truly gripping viewing experience when Danny Rand returns to the streaming service on September 7th.
