James Gunn’s detractors lose their heaviest artillery after somebody else scripts a DC icon to fart in the Batmobile

One of the favored weapons in the arsenal of James Gunn‘s many detractors is that his signature style of humor doesn’t easily jive with the more hopeful and optimistic outlook of a certain Man of Steel, which has created concern that the filmmaker’s upcoming Superman: Legacy will be a tonal shambles.

While it shouldn’t need to be pointed out that any writer and director worth their salt is adaptable to almost any style and tone, those with a penchant for lambasting the co-CEO for potentially filling the likes of the aforementioned Legacy and The Brave and the Bold with dick and fart jokes have lost plenty of momentum after Gunn was beaten to the punch.

Even though it’s perfectly in keeping with the fan favorite’s anarchic style, DC shared a clip to celebrate the digital release of 2017’s Batman and Harley Quinn with a segue that finds Melissa Rauch’s iteration of the character passing gas in the back seat of the Batmobile, leading to a phenomenal response from the late, great Kevin Conroy’s Dark Knight.

The clip might be from an animated feature that was released half a decade ago, but it just goes to show that fart jokes already have a precedent for being made in front of a stoic and straight-faced DC legend. If it’s good enough for the inimitable Conroy, then maybe Gunn will get the leeway to slip in a flatulent gag or two, even though you get the sneaking suspicion that lowbrow humor isn’t going to factor into Superman: Legacy in any way, shape, or form.
