Jimmy Fallon To Be The Next Oscar Host?

Now we're getting word that Jimmy Fallon is in talks that may lead to him being the host of the 2013 Oscars. He was the choice of recently-departed president of the Academy Tom Sherak, but the problem is that, since the Oscars are on ABC, they're not going to like having a rival of one of their shows as the host. However, they have no say in who the host will be, but you can be sure they'll make their opinion known.

Looking back at the last few Oscar telecasts, we’ve seen a varying amount of success when it comes to the Academy’s choice of host. There have been some pretty good ones (Billy Crystal, Hugh Jackman, Ellen DeGeneres), some forgettable ones (Steve Martin & Alec Baldwin), and downright disastrous ones (James Franco & Anne Hathaway).

Personally, I’m not a big fan of this choice. I don’t find Fallon particularly funny, nor do I think he’s a particularly good talk show host. I first gave him a chance when he took over Conan O’Brien’s 12:30 slot, but found that he couldn’t tell jokes very well. I still check on him periodically to see if he’s improved, but have found that he hasn’t very much. That being said, he obviously has his fans though as his show is still going.

Plus, the Academy could always do worse. They could always decide to re-team Franco and Hathaway, right?

But in all seriousness, I would much rather see them bring back Jackman, DeGeneres, or even Billy Crystal (even though he was a little dryer during this year’s telecast than he usual is). If they want a late-night talk show host though, I would suggest Conan, or even Craig Ferguson as a host. Now those are two choices I would love to see!

Whomever does end up getting chosen though, we’ll probably find out in the next couple of months.

The 85th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, February 24, 2013.
