Kevin Smith has been part of the Arrowverse family for a couple of years now, as he’s directed a handful of episodes of both Supergirl and The Flash. This season, however, will see him step out in front of the camera for the first time – along with his longtime collaborator and best pal Jason Mewes.

It makes sense that the duo’s role will occur in Smith’s next directing gig for The Flash, episode 17 of season 4, titled “Null and Annoyed.” Not that the cameo was Smith’s idea, though, as it turns out it was all down to the episode’s writers. The actor/director revealed the news while talking on his Fatman on Batman podcast, saying:

“I guess I can spoil it here. At one point, like you know, I did my first episode of Flash, and they asked Jason Mewes to be in the episode. He was up in Vancouver, so I was like ‘He’s always by my side, so he’ll be there anyway, absolutely.’ So this time around, there’s a scene that had two security guards in it, and so the writers of the episode, Kristen and Lauren, asked me specifically. ‘We’re wondering, do you and Jay want to play the security guards?’”

Flash fans will remember that Mewes has actually appeared on the show before. If you recall, he turned up via a walk-on part in Smith’s Arrowverse debut, season 2’s “The Runaway Dinosaur.”

Elsewhere on the show, Smith went on to joke that he initially thought about turning the role down, as the acting job would require him to dress in smart wear instead of his signature casual shirt and shorts combo. However, it was too fun an opportunity to pass up and he ultimately said yes. He also clarified that the cameo won’t see him and Mewes reprising their iconic roles as Jay and Silent Bob, but it’ll definitely allude to them.

“And they suited us up like security guards. And for the first time, I think since my father died, I wore dress pants. So we shot a scene, Jason and I, where we play two security guards in The Flash. And it’s not Jay and Silent Bob, but Jason speaks and I don’t. So there you go.”

Finally, Smith talked about his “really nice” experience working on the episode. He warned that some fans may have extreme opinions towards it, but promised that it’s “very funny” and full of “visual jokes.”

“It was fun, we had a really nice time. It’s a good, funny episode. People are going to see it and be like ‘You f*cking jumped the shark with this.’ But it’s very funny. There’s some witty sh*t, and there’s some visual jokes.”

The Flash airs every Tuesday on The CW, with Smith’s outing arriving on March 20th.
