“Jon Snow is dead,” reads the official synopsis for Game of Thrones‘ season 6 premiere, “The Red Woman,” and today’s barnstorming new trailer for HBO’s crown jewel lays out its cards very early indeed, showcasing the fallen Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch lying eerily still.

But the mere presence of Davos Seaworth and Melisandre leads us to believe that there’s more at play within the walls of Castle Black than we know, and that’s just one of the many, many mysteries teed up with today’s piping hot sizzle reel.

Mild spoilers after the jump!

Jumping from the icy plains of the North straight to Essos and in particular Meereen, Peter Dinklage’s wayward Tyrion Lannister looks primed to capitalize on a power vacuum, particularly now that the Mother of Dragons is being held captive by a Dothraki tribe. Then again, with the mighty Drogon soaring overhead, we don’t imagine Daenerys Targaryen will spend too much of season 6 shackled with chains.

Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of Game of Thrones season 6 is the return of the Greyjoys, with plenty of shots from the Iron Islands littered all across the snippet. There’s also a peek at Arya’s rigorous training session deep within Braavos’ Hall of Faces, while a determined Cersei Lannister fuels the fire of a political upheaval in order to bring the Faith Militant down to size. It’s an excellent trailer – one to get the blood pumping. And with a little less than two weeks to go until the S6 premiere, there’s not long to wait before we get to see all the action unfold.

Take heed, young explorer, for the night is dark and full of terrors. Game of Thrones season 6 roars onto the small screen in all its mythic glory on Sunday, April 24.
