That’s all we know for now, but this info comes as both a surprise and something we expected after the season 4 finale. First of all, Lex died at his sister Lena’s hand, so it could be considered a bit of shock that he’s back so soon. However, the last scene of the episode saw the Monitor waving a hand in the direction of Luthor’s corpse, which suggested the cosmic being may have some use for the villain.

Or maybe this makes more sense than at first glance. Cryer’s return might not be as simple as him playing a resurrected Lex. In the original “Crisis” comic book event, Alexander Luthor Jr. of Earth-3 had a significant role. In this world where Lex is a good guy, Alexander is his son with Lois Lane who’s born at the beginning of the Crisis. To cut a long story short, this makes him the key to stopping the destruction of the multiverse. So, maybe Cryer could play some heroic alt-Lex in the crossover?

We’ve got a lot of questions right now, but something we know for sure is that “Crisis” will be full of returns of old favorites we might not have expected to see. Brandon Routh is suiting up again as Superman in the event, alongside Tyler Hoechlin’s version. Plus, Batman ’66‘s Burt Ward will put in an appearance.

Worlds will live, worlds will die when the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” begins later this year on The CW. Stay tuned for more details as SDCC unfolds.
