Over the last six weeks we’ve been bombarded with all sorts of rumor, speculation and fan theories as to who the TVA really are, why they do what they do and the identity of the person pulling all of the strings behind the scenes. Yesterday’s Loki finale answered a lot of questions, but fans were still shocked by the fact it was Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie who plunged the multiverse into chaos.
Both WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier rushed through a few too many plot points during their respective finales, resulting in their weakest episodes. Loki decided to walk a different path and take things at a much slower pace, with the bulk of the concluding chapter focusing on a lengthy conversation between Sylvie, Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief and Jonathan Majors’ debuting Kang the Conqueror, in which the effects of their actions were spelled out in great detail.
Loki wanted to keep He Who Remains alive so that he and Sylvie could be together on the Sacred Timeline, but she was far too preoccupied with vengeance. As we discovered moments later, stabbing one Kang variant through the chest may have been an awful idea, when countless more are already impacting the rapidly-branching stream of realities.
In a new interview, Di Martino was clearly overjoyed to be freed from the shackles of secrecy, and addressed why Sylvie did what she did at the expense of both the multiverse and her partnership/relationship with Loki.
“She’s been on her mission her whole life to get to whoever is behind the TVA, who robbed her life from her, and who took that little girl. The anger that she had as a little girl has just been growing and growing and growing her whole life, to this point, where the guy who caused it, in her eyes, is standing right in front of her. She thinks that killing him is going to make her feel better.
That feeling in that moment is stronger than any feelings she has for Loki. It’s quite a problem. It works both ways as well. Maybe Loki can’t trust and Sylvie can’t be trusted. If you can’t trust someone, then can they trust you? Nothing works, does it, if you don’t trust each other? It’s just broken.”
There was a lot to digest across the course of the finale, but at least we’re guaranteed a Season 2 to fill in more of the gaps, with Loki letting the cat out of the bag that Kang is indeed the MCU’s next major threat.
