Signalling John Luther’s first appearance on our screens since December of 2015, the all-new fifth installment was another thrilling and gripping watch, and though some of the twists were unfortunately spoiled ahead of time, folks still tuned in for each and every episode, eager to see where the story would go next.

As such, the BBC saw solid ratings from season 5, with the finale drawing in 4.6 million viewers, “winning its Friday night slot in the process with a 21.7 percent audience share.” That follows hot on the heels of the premiere smashing ratings on New Year’s Day and even beating Doctor Who, which fell a bit short with its own numbers.

So, that’s another successful season of Luther now in the books, with the BBC no doubt pleased with how it all played out. It seems that the critics enjoyed it quite a bit, too, with its Rotten Tomatoes’ rating currently standing at 100% – though that’s only based on 11 reviews.

Still, it’s clear that the team delivered yet again, giving us an electrifying new season to feast on and one that as always, has left us wanting more. When and if we’ll get more remains to be seen, as the BBC hasn’t yet revealed what will come next for the character, but at the very least, fans can take comfort knowing that they’ve got yet another excellent season of Luther to watch over and over again as the wait begins for Elba’s beloved detective to return.
