Taking a firm step out of Hell’s Kitchen and into Harlem, from the get-go, it’s immediately clear that Cheo Hodari Coker and Co. are cooking up a superhero origin story that sets itself apart from both Daredevil and Jessica Jones – the music, the characters, the environments – and those of you who have seen the latter spinoff series will already be familiar with Colter’s reluctant hero.

On board alongside Mike Colter are Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Frank Whaley as Rafael Scarfe, Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth, Theo Rossi as Shades, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple.

As Dawson’s battle-worn nurse puts so well: “Sometimes, if you want justice, you have to get it yourself.” Expect Luke Cage to premiere on September 30. Beyond that, we already know that Marvel’s small-screen plans are angling toward new seasons of Jessica Jones and Daredevil, but not before The Defenders get their own time in the spotlight via the studio’s hotly-anticipated ensemble series.
