Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has received almost unanimous praise following the show’s bow on Netflix late last month. From the complex portrayal of the title private eye – one you daren’t take your eye off – to the series’ delicate handling of abusive relationships and other pressing, universal themes.

Acting as part of Marvel’s grand vision for its small screen universe, Jessica Jones is a series that stands on its own two feet remarkably well, managing to escape the crimson shadow cast by Daredevil – and then some. It’s little wonder, then, that the writer-director has expressed caution when quizzed about the potential of a sophomore season so soon.

With Luke Cage and then Iron Fist to follow, not to mention Daredevil season 2, it becomes a question of where Jessica Jones can squeeze into the company’s increasingly crowded slate. As Rosenberg herself points out to Variety, the fate of the show’s future, no matter how critically acclaimed it has been thus far, rests in The Powers That Be.

“I’d love that. Me, personally – I’m ready to go,” regarding a second season. She continued, “Marvel has a lot going on. So does Netflix. So I don’t know if a second season fits into this schedule, when, whether or not we’ll get one. I don’t know any of that. I personally, I’m ready to jump in now. I’ve had some time off. I needed some time off! It was a really hard run.

“What I have is Krysten Ritter, and she and I are on exactly the same page with this character. And that is a women that will not do something that violates the character in any way. So if I have nothing to do with it, I trust that she’s going to be the protector of the character.”

Birch Street. Higgins Drive. Cobalt Lane. But will one of those avenues lead Jessica Jones to sophomore season under Marvel and Netflix? Time will tell.
