For the most part, in recent years the gimmicks they’ve used to get things out into the open haven’t been successful. They’ve all felt at least a bit forced and been lacking in humor, which is a pretty bad combination. In this episode though, the character of Darren works very well. While he’s over the top and I definitely can’t say that including him isn’t gimmicky, it didn’t make me want to cover my eyes and groan, which is saying something in itself. Maybe that’s because we’ve all seen guys like him – guys who take pleasure in other people’s drama, or maybe it’s because of the way he’s so perfectly explained by the Mother. Either way, it brings many of the problems that had been simmering unspoken up to the forefront in an effective way, meaning the characters finally have to address them.
One problem that is addressed in the best way is the effect Ted’s feelings for Robin will have on his relationship with Barney. Barney has been a bit oblivious prior to this season, and while Ted’s true feelings have been touched on a few times this year, they haven’t been addressed quite like this. The fact that Barney is able to realize how Ted is feeling and simply focus on their friendship rather than any potentially awkward situation speaks volumes to Barney’s growth, both as a friend and a person. While I haven’t been thrilled about the way Barney and Robin’s relationship has developed, I have loved watching Barney mature, and this is another shining step for him.
Overall, this may be the best episode of the season. It’s one of the first times in a few years that there’s a quality balance of emotional moments and humor. Honestly, I can’t really find any complaints with this one, making it a pretty great way to end the first half of the season. There won’t be any more episodes until January, but there’s an awful lot that has been set up for the show going forward. Hopefully the second batch of episodes follows Bass Player Wanted‘s lead and continues to deliver on all levels.

- Marshall and Lily’s “pause” is still one of the greatest relationship techniques on TV.
