How I Met Your Mother Review: “Rally” (Season 9, Episode 18)

Now that the last gap of more than a week between episodes of How I Met Your Mother has passed, the show is finally into its homestretch. There's six episodes to go. Six more episodes for all the loose ends from over the years to be wrapped up, including the most important one: Ted finally meeting the Mother. But before any of that can happen, Barney had rally from the worst hangover of all time, and that's where this week's episode "Rally" picks up.

The scenes between Ted and the Mother are still some of the most enjoyable and it’s wonderful to see what was instant chemistry on screen grow even further with each scene they spend together. Even though I still can’t get past the fact that we’re seeing so much of them as a couple before the moment where we see them meet, if that’s set aside, both the brief opening and the ending where Ted cures her of a hangover are excellent scenes. Despite all the flaws of the past couple seasons, that almost makes me wish we could have an extra season of watching them date. I know that would no longer be how he met their mother, but getting to know their mother would be far more enjoyable than the Barney and Robin antics that we’ve been forced to sit through over the last few seasons.

While “Rally” isn’t the most enjoyable episode of season nine, far from it actually, it’s certainly not a poor one. It was funny in parts and there was nothing majorly wrong with it. That being said, there was nothing all that right with it either, so on the whole it’s a rather mediocre episode and I’m fairly indifferent toward it.

With this episode complete, we now have a mere 5 episodes to wrap up the final 10 hours until the wedding, and the events that transpire during the wedding. While some parts of the season seemed to drag, especially in the first half, it almost seems as if there won’t be time to properly finish up everything that needs to happen. The wedding deserves a significant chunk of screen time, and it’s going to be a major letdown if Ted lays eyes on the Mother and then it fades to black. I suppose nothing that significant has to happen in the next 8 hours or so, but I have a hunch it won’t just be skated over. If nothing else, it’ll be interesting to see how the rest of How I Met Your Mother wraps up.

Other Random Notes

  • The Too-Many-Manhattan’s project.
  • Great callback to Tantrum soda. I still want to drink some.
  • “Dude, you’re a grown man. Why’re you throwing a tantrum?”
  • There was potential for a severe bacon hangover there.
  • For a moment I thought there really was a ring bear.
  • The quip about Marshall’s dad’s health seemed to be a bit too soon still.
  • Bacon. It would taste great on L&T sandwiches.
