The new trailer for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves shows more of the Red Wizards and a team that seems unprepared to handle the level of chaos they’re going to throw down.
The trailer begins with Edgin the Bard (Chris Pine) and Holga the Barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez) tied up, but it’s not long before Holga breaks free and unleashes a beat-down upon her captors as Edgin hopelessly tries to break free. A party of thieves helped someone steal a magical item and consequently unleashed the greatest evil the world has ever known, the Red Wizards. The Red Wizards created an army of the Undead and now the thieves have to build a team to save the world. What could go wrong?
The clips show exactly what the Red Wizards can do. One is seen floating and conjuring a magic spell for the terrifying undead to rise up. Roots outstretch from its hand as smoke billows beneath him in contrast to this team of ragtag heroes who don’t seem all that ready to face a threat this massive. They also have the power to animate statues, which the party finds out when a dragon comes to life later in the trailer.
In Dungeons & Dragons lore, the Red Wizards of Thay are a class of evil wizards known for their evil spellcasting. They are slavers, and demonologists, and are known for their magical experimentation, and plot to destroy the other nations in Rashemen. It’s unclear how much of this continuity will be included in the move, but the inspiration is evident.
Early reactions have indicated that Chris Pine is the best part of the movie, and that’s saying something with a cast this talented. Pine has already shown he’s leading man material in Star Trek movies, and as a supportive ally in Wonder Woman, so it shouldn’t come off as too much of a surprise. The way things are stacking up, this might just be able to break the curse to become a good D&D movie.
