With its hotly-anticipated premiere pegged for September 22nd, FOX’s Gotham — an ambitious take on the origin stories of one Jim Gordon — is quickly shaping up to be one of fall’s most intriguing new properties.

Starring Ben McKenzie as the aforementioned crime fighter, the show will be situated in an age before The Batman, with Gordon entering the scene as a rookie member of the local police department who is “destined for greatness.” To achieve this feat, our protagonist must navigate through the corrupt underbelly of Gotham city, an unforgiving world that will introduce viewers to an array of famous DC villains in their nascent state — including The Riddler, Poison Ivy and Catwoman.

Not only that, it seems ardent fans can look forward to seeing some of the lesser known characters of Batman’s legacy on screen, with Jada Pinkett Smith’s Fish Mooney being a prime example. And though viewers can expect to learn more about the finer details of these rich origin stories as the series unfolds, Jim Gordon will still serve as the crux of FOX’s ambitious TV universe.

Following an exclusive screening at Comic-Con last month, early reviews of Gotham have been overly positive, stating that FOX’s venture into the DC canon has resulted in a compelling world choke full of imagination. Whether the general audience take to the concept in a similar way remains to be seen, but with an impressive ensemble behind it along with the promise of uncovering the minutia of Batman’s lore, you can color us very excited indeed.

Gotham will have its series premiere on September 22nd and air every Monday at 8/7c on FOX. In the meantime, you can check out the trailer below and let us know your own thoughts on the upcoming show in the comments section.
