As with any hot property in pop culture, The Walking Dead has its fair share of fan theories surrounding it, both in regards to the comic book and television show. Some are pretty out there while others do, admittedly, make a fair bit of sense. Today, we’ve stumbled upon a new one which falls into the latter category, and it’s really rather interesting.
YouTube user MovieIdol has put together a video which attempts to predict how The Walking Dead will end, presenting the theory that the story isn’t actually taking place in the present day, but is instead being told at some point in the future by a much older Carl Grimes. Think about that for a second.
Now, while this does have some holes, the video does a pretty good job at explaining everything. To start off, MovieIdol suggests that Carl’s scenes on the show seem to be more fleshed out and detailed than those involving other characters, which would make sense if he’s the one telling the story – since he was present for these moments and can remember them in vivid detail. Admittedly, we can’t say that that’s always the case, but when you think about it, it’s probably true more often than not (his recent meeting with Negan is used as an example).
The other interesting thing that the video puts forth is that the reason Rick is always depicted as so heroic is because he’s Carl’s father and the boy obviously idolizes him. Unfortunately for Carl, though, MovieIdol predicts that The Walking Dead will end with his dad’s death before showing us one final scene of the older Carl telling the story. We don’t know who he’s relaying the tale to, but we imagine it might be his children.
On top of all this, we also know that creator Robert Kirkman has a soft spot for the character, calling him one of his favorites on several occasions. This could suggest that Carl will survive until the end, as Kirkman wouldn’t want to kill off a character that he’s so fond of. The one hole here would be that many fans think the youngster may actually meet his maker quite soon given that Chandler Riggs is heading to college next year and may want off the show. However, that hasn’t been confirmed just yet and as far as we know, the actor is still set to return next season.
Whether you buy into all this or not, it’s certainly fun to think about. As with most fan theories, it probably won’t lead to very much, but you can’t deny that MovieIdol brings up some interesting points and honestly, it wouldn’t be the worst way to end The Walking Dead. For now, we’ll simply just have to wait and see where this all goes, but if one thing’s for sure, it’s that we’ll be paying much closer attention to Carl’s scenes from here on out.
