Yes, season 8 of HBO’s smash hit Game of Thrones is in the can (production just wrapped in Belfast, Northern Ireland last month), and understandably, fans are starting to sweat over the fate of their favorite characters.

True, folks like Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow Aegon Targaryen may seem safe, but George R.R. Martin has proven time and time again that he’s willing to kill off any major Thrones character at the drop of a hat – which, apparently, is a writing style he weaned from J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy masterclass, The Lord of the Rings.

Be that as it may, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister on the show, has gone on record to promise us that whatever ends up happening, viewers will ultimately be left satisfied, with all the pieces fitting into the puzzle nicely.

“I read it, and I wrote [creators] Dan [“D.B.” Weiss] and David [Benioff] and said I don’t think they could have done a better job. I mean, when I read it — I’ve spent so many years working on this and been guessing and trying to figure out how this will end — and when I read it, some of the parts of it I’d get, and other parts of it were just completely shocking and surprising.”

“And it wasn’t, there were none of those horrible — you know shows where it’s a murder mystery and at the very last minute you find out it doesn’t make sense? But here all the pieces fit into this massive jigsaw puzzle.”

Of course, the actor wouldn’t spill any plot details, but you can bet that they’re going to go out with a bang in the final season, which means we can expect a higher proportion of complex effects shots mainly involving CGI dragons and lots of angry bearded men chopping bits off each other. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Spanning for a total of six episodes and looking to bring us a wholly satisfying conclusion to HBO’s grand fantasy saga, it’s small wonder why fans are looking forward to Game of Thrones season 8 with hushed excitement, and as soon as we learn more about what’s in store, we’ll be sure to let you know.
