Pretty Little Liars Review: “Surfing The Aftershocks” (Season 5, Episode 3)

Pretty Little Liars has perfected the art of a good mystery, and Alison (Sasha Pieterse) is still at the center of it all. From who killed her, to who tried to kill her, to who would want to kill her now, Ali's drama continues to take center stage, and for the first time, it looks like the Liars are ready to move in a different direction.

“Surfing the Aftershocks” starts to touch on the issue of contempt among the Liars and Ali. Recent events have suppressed those emotions somewhat, but they have always been the elephant in the room, just waiting for an excuse to come out and play. Ezra (Ian Harding) isn’t the only one who should be subscribing to the ‘honesty is everything’ theory these days.

A little more truth going around would be a refreshing change of pace. Pretty Little Liars becomes increasingly frustrating for fans when they open up multiple new storylines without resolving the ones that already exist. It’s like a mystery, stacked on top of a more complicated mystery, stuffed in a mystery that’s just out of reach. Sound confusing? It is.

At least fans can cross one person off the suspect list this week, and that’s a small victory in itself. Jason (Drew Van Acker) has produced a legitimate alibi for the night of his mother’s murder. Not a huge surprise judging by his reaction to seeing the body. He was clearly devastated, and this character isn’t known for masking his emotions well. He may lie, but his face always gives it away when something is off kilter.

Unfortunately, it looks like Mr. Hasting’s may be involved. This puts a different spin on things. He’s been a consistent contender for creepy parent of the year, especially after he revealed that he was Jason’s biological father, but he has gone a step past that now. Whatever secret him and Melissa are keeping definitely has something to do with what happened to Jessica DiLaurentis (Andrea Parker), but it’s most likely going to be dragged out for most of this season before it finally comes to light. That’s only going to add to the frustration that fans feel watching this show, so hopefully in the end it’s juicy enough to be worth it.
