The Netflix series The Crown is a very popular title for the streaming service. Set against the backdrop of some of the most significant events of the latter half of the 20th century, the drama series centres on Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy), and Prince Philip, the Duke Of Edinburgh (Matt Smith) – and all the romance and political machinations that swirl around them.
The Royal family drama was a hit when the first season aired in November 2016, with the intelligent writing and outstanding performances from the leads being praised for humanizing Queen Elizabeth II and her family. Thankfully, that continued into the sophomore run as well, with WGTC’s own Joseph Falcone rating it quite well in his review, too, describing it as “scandalous, seductive and stately” and promising that “it will have viewers begging for a third helping.”
As such, it’s not terribly surprising to hear that even the Royal Family themselves watch it. That’s according to Cinema Blend, who say that Meghan Markle is doing some research ahead of the big wedding, which includes tuning into the acclaimed Netflix series. Not only that, but Prince Harry watches with her, which should make for an interesting viewing experience for the couple. You know, given that Meghan comes from an acting background and Harry is royalty himself, allowing each of them to bring their own unique perspectives to the table.
And luckily for them, a third helping of The Crown is definitely on the way. The only thing is that it’ll see a massive shake-up of the cast. As the show moves forward through the decades, Claire Foy and Matt Smith are set to be replaced as Elizabeth and Phillip for more age-appropriate actors.
The only news we’ve had on this so far is that Foy will be replaced on The Crown with Murder on the Orient Express‘ Olivia Colman. The next Phillip, meanwhile, has yet to be found – though Colman has said she hopes it might be her former Broadchurch co-star David Tennant, which would no doubt delight Doctor Who fans. As always, watch this space for more.
