Deadline reports that Constantin Film is currently at work on a Netflix original series based on the Resident Evil games.

Though the Resident Evil film series has proven surprisingly sustainable under the guidance of Paul W. S. Anderson, many would argue that the time is long past due for a fresh take on the popular video game franchise.

Sure enough, Deadline is now reporting that Constantin Film is currently at work on a Netflix original series based on the action-horror property, and a search is apparently underway for a showrunner to shepherd the project. While no one is commenting on the news just yet, Deadline relays intel that the show will “expand the Resident Evil universe and deepen the existing mythology.”

It’s also said that the series will maintain the basic premise of the games, while exploring the inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the post-apocalyptic world created by the outbreak of the T-virus. Finally, the report adds that the show’s expected to incorporate “all of Resident Evil’s signature elements,” including action scenes and “easter eggs.”

The timing of this project is pretty noteworthy, seeing how a Resident Evil movie reboot is also thought to be on the way. Last month, it was reported that 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts had been hired to write and helm the franchise’s first big screen outing since 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. It may be too early to start speculating on the possibility of a Resident Evil universe divided across screens big and small, but hey, we won’t stop you if you’d care to dream.

In any case, while Anderson’s six-film run in the series wasn’t to everyone’s taste, the Resident Evil franchise has certainly done very well for itself by the standards of video game adaptations, and it sounds like Constantin is only getting more ambitious with their take on the property. Stay tuned for further details.
