THR is reporting that Russell Brand will be hosting the 2012 MTV Movie Award Show on June 3rd, live from the Gibson Amphiteatre in Universal City, California.
Despite Brand never hosting a movie award show before, he has played host for MTV in the past. Back in 2008 the comedian caused a stir while hosting the 2008 VMAs. During the ceremony, he made some choice remarks about the Jonas Brothers and their purity rings, to which singer Jordin Sparks retorted:
“I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody — guy or girl — wants to be a slut.”
While part of me wants to believe he will not cause such a stir this time, it would be unlike Mr. Brand not to do so. Despite this decision coming as quite a surprise to some of us, Stephen Friedman, president of MTV, stated:
“With his amazing ability to span the full spectrum of comedy from the most high to lowbrow, Russell’s smart, unpredictable wit uniquely connects him to our audience. His rock-n-roll sensibility and fearlessness give us the perfect partner with whom to take a leap of faith with as we meld the worlds of movies and music together on one very special night.”
One thing is for sure, the chance of Brand disappointing as host at the award show is slim to none. Whether he gets through the night without insulting someone will be the true challenge.
Bridesmaids and The Hunger Games lead the award show with eight nominations a piece this year. Make sure to get in your votes today!
