Second Season Of Stranger Things Likened To Harry Potter

Though it's still early, early days on Stranger Things, producers of the hit sci-fi series consider the second season to be more of a sequel.

Imbued with a spooky, decidedly old-school atmosphere and more ’80s references that you can shake a VHS tape at, Matt and Ross Duffer’s Stranger Things proved to be the talk of the town earlier this month, and already there has been chatter of the Netflix Original being picked up for a second season.

That’s something that series producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen touched upon during a recent interview and here, co-creator Ross Duffer told Variety that there’s still plenty of mysteries yet to unfold within the remote town of Hawkins, Indiana.

Spoilers to follow if you’ve yet to finish the entire eight-episode season……

Still with us? Here, Duffer teases The Upside Down – which has spawned a 30-page document at Netflix towers – and the “whole other world” that awaits.

There’s a lot there we don’t know or understand. Even with ‘The Upside Down,’ we have a 30-page document that is pretty intricate in terms of what it all means, and where this monster actually came from, and why aren’t there more monsters — we have all this stuff that we just didn’t have time for, or we didn’t feel like we needed to get into in season one, because of the main tension of Will. We have that whole other world that we haven’t fully explored in this season, and that was very purposeful.

Matt Duffer, the other sibling behind the hit series, also discussed Stranger Things during a recent chat with Empire, where the co-creator likened the second season to Harry Potter in that we, the audience, are watching the core group of kids grow up and mature before our very eyes.

“We’ve been talking about Harry Potter, even though it’s weird to compare. I like that you’re revisiting these kids and watching them grow up on a year-to-year basis.”

Lastly, when quizzed by IGN about the all-but-confirmed sophomore run, Duffer – Matt, not Ross – revealed that the writers are considering season 2 to be a sequel, which really raises more questions than it answers.

We don’t answer all the questions by the end of the season — there are definitely some dangling threads. The hope is that it feels satisfying but that we left room and that if people respond to it we can go back into this world. But if we do get to go back, it’s not a second season as much as a sequel.

Stranger Things launched via Netflix on July 15. Spoilers: We loved it.
