‘Secret Invasion’s most intriguing character has MCU ties going all the way back to Phase One

Sometimes it really is all connected.

Secret Invasion might stand apart from the rest of the MCU in terms of its tone, but it’s actually dripping with ties to the wider universe. Just look at its first episode, which combines the spy thriller vibe of Captain America: The Winter Soldier with many of the characters from Captain Marvel, who were last seen in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Not to mention finding room for a veteran of the Black Panther films.

Another link to Marvel’s past can actually be found in perhaps the show’s most intriguing new character, Sonya Falsworth, as played by Olivia Colman. While Emilia Clarke’s G’iah is also also an exciting addition, we’ve already got a strong handle on who she is one episode in while Sonya remains a mystery, as it’s currently unclear if the MI6 head will be an ally or an antagonist for Nick Fury and his team.

Her presumed family history, however, suggests she can be trusted. Although Marvel has yet to officially confirm there’s any importance to this, Sonya Falsworth shares her last name with James Montgomery Falsworth, one of Steve Rogers’ loyal Howling Commandos during World War Two. Played by JJ Feild, Falsworth’s similarly British heritage is another strong sign pointing to their familial connection.

If Sonya is indeed, say, James’ granddaughter, she is the second descendant of the Howling Commandos introduced into the MCU, following Principal Morita in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the grandson of The First Avenger‘s Jim Morita (both portrayed by Kenneth Choi). While James Montgomery never took on his comic book mantle of Union Jack in his sole live-action appearance, it’s possible the title could be passed on to Sonya, even if only as some kind of MI6 callsign.

As we eagerly await further answers on the allegiances of Secret Invasion‘s cast of characters, the suspected truth of Sonya’s family history could help us understand where her loyalties truly lie.
