Sons Of Anarchy Review: “Greensleeves” (Season 7, Episode 7)

"Greensleeves" was a bit of a reprieve from the growing body count that Sons of Anarchy has been throwing at viewers this season. Unfortunately, that didn't keep the tragedies at bay. Even with Jax (Charlie Hunnam) attempting to come to a less bloody resolution for the conflict that he created with Marks (Billy Brown), there were too many variables at play to have predicted the outcome of tonight's shocking final scene.

It struck me as an odd choice in general. Bobby represents the heart of the club, in a sense, but there were other characters who could have organically found themselves in the same predicament and had a bigger impact. Namely, Chibs (Tommy Flanagan). Granted, Chibs is still playing out his own storyline with the Sheriff, but he’s been a much more active part of this season. With Bobby blending into the background a bit more lately, the writers are relying on fans to call up his long history with Jax in order for this character being caught in the crossfire to have the desired effect. If there’s any reason for Jax to go to war, an all-out war, not one fought under the table or through a series of manipulations, it’s one of the core members of the Sons of Anarchy being compromised.

This sentiment may still be extended to Juice (Theo Rossi). Even in the wake of recent events, it looks like Jax is giving him one final chance to prove himself. Killing Lin is personal for Jax and although he’d be fine if Juice failed and had to be dealt with accordingly, he’d probably still rather have him succeed. It would be the closure he thinks he needs, having already personally beat and antagonized the man he believes ultimately responsible for Tara’s death. Would Jax risk sending Juice in if he didn’t think he would do anything possible to earn his patch back? Doubtful. Which leads me to the conclusion that if anyone is going to kill or torture Juice, it better be Mr. Mayhem.

There’s something about Juice that continues to be endearing in spite of his wild card placement in this storyline. He’s had several occasions to redeem himself by revealing Gemma’s secret, and he hasn’t. At this point, Gemma is walking on pins and needles and although she doesn’t realize it, maybe having the truth out there would be a relief. It would also be her undoing, but she’s coming undone a little each episode from the stress of bearing her reality either way. The truth is going to undoubtedly come out now that she said it out loud and Abel heard it, it’s just a matter of whether or not anyone believes it.

SAMCO is moving toward the finish line, but there’s no way to know who will make it all the way. With only 6 episodes to go, it’s a sprint, not a marathon to wrap up all the drama.
