Quite a few Superman villains have shown up in Supergirl over the past eighteen months or so. Some have had a history with the Man of Steel, while others have been rebooted as members of Kara Danvers’ rogues gallery. Which category Mr. Mxyzptlk will fall into remains to be seen, but it has now been confirmed that the villain is coming to season 2.
Who will play him is still unknown, but he’ll star in a total of two episodes. For those of you unfamiliar with the comic book version of the character, Mr. Mxyzptlk is a fifth-dimensional imp with the power to do almost anything he can imagine. He could transform Superman into ashes or erase him from existence, but for him, there would be no real fun in that. Originally depicted as a cartoonish joke, he’s been given a makeover in recent years as a more serious threat, so it’s likely that he’ll be depicted in a similar fashion on Supergirl.
Speculation is already running rampant that the villain will be used for the musical crossover which will bring The Flash to Earth-38. Seeing as he pitted the Scarlet Speedster against the Maiden of Might in the comic books, that does seem likely, but we can’t say for sure as of right now. We’re just going to have to wait and see how he factors into things when Supergirl returns next year.
