We’re now slightly over a month out from the premiere of season 1 of Swamp Thing, and in this newly released teaser, we get our first look at the DC Universe show’s title character.

The short preview seems less concerned with revealing plot than creating mood. We start off with an ominous tracking shot that takes us through a dark and misty marsh, before stopping at a spot where something is bubbling beneath the surface of the water. From here, we see the Swamp Thing emerging in all his slimy, red-eyed glory.

Though there’s no way of telling, apparently that’s Derek Mears in the costume. The actor and stuntman has a history of performing in masks, having played Jason Voorhees in the 2009 Friday the 13th remake, and one of the titular creatures in 2010’s Predators.

Playing the Swamp Thing’s less monstrous alter ego Alec Holland, meanwhile, is Andy Bean, who’s also set to appear later this year in It: Chapter Two. The cast of the upcoming DC series also includes Gotham and Teen Wolf actress Crystal Reed, Candyman star Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Beals of Flashdance fame.

The new teaser follows hot on the heels of some bad news regarding first season of Swamp Thing. According to recent reports (and one of the cast members), production on the show was shut down on Tuesday night, as crew members were informed that the season will now consist of 10 episodes, as opposed to 13.

It’s not the most promising sign, it must be said, but with Aquaman and The Conjuring helmsman James Wan involved as executive producer, perhaps Swamp Thing can still offer a satisfying saga of Gothic horror and romance. You can judge for yourself when the show comes to DC Universe on May 31st.
