Teen Wolf Review: “Alpha Pact” (Season 3, Episode 11)

Ordinarily, this would have been the episode of Teen Wolf that set us up for the big season finale in typical 'to be continued..' fashion. That was before the show received a season order with twice as many episodes as its previous two seasons. Yet, curiously, they still appear to be following the same formula.

Meanwhile, Derek is practicing what Isaac (Daniel Sharman) calls “the art of doing nothing.” With Cora (Adelaide Kane) still hanging on between life and death, Derek can’t manage to break out of his funk. It probably doesn’t help that he was just fully manipulated (and, knocked unconscious) by his girlfriend. I think it may be safe to begin referring to her as his ex-girlfriend at this point. What do you think?

When things go wrong, his character has always shown signs of intense suffering – more so than anyone else on the show- which if you think about it is par for the course with any brooding supernatural. He takes life and himself ultra-seriously, all the time, and given his painful history – rightfully so. Imagine what he’s going through now when he thinks he has the chance to save his sister for the second time when he thought he failed at it the first time around. It must come as a major blow to his chiseled chest to be such a let down to so many people as of late.

How convenient was it that Peter (Ian Bohen) introduced a possible way to save his niece that involved Derek losing his Alpha status? Peter seems so committed to regaining what he’s lost with Derek by enveloping him in his wealth of werewolf knowledge, but somehow I still have an inkling that we’re going find out that he’s in cahoots with Jennifer.

At least there’s a silver lining to the whole situation, Derek as a Beta means that he won’t be competing with Scott for top dog. It also means that he doesn’t stand a chance against Kali – who hopefully, given her recent enlightenment, will be switching sides any episode now. Preferably she’ll bring along the nice twin, too.

This episode of Teen Wolf left us scratching our heads when we realized that the FBI agent Stiles was giving lip to the entire time was Scott’s dad. The information we’ve gotten so far about him has been pretty sketchy, but seeing the way Stiles reacted to him left me wanting more. Only Stiles could get away with talking to a Fed like that!

What do you think about Derek being demoted from the top spot in order to save his sister? Are you questioning Peter’s motives or are you happily taking them at face value? Let us know in the comment section below what you think is coming when we pick back up with Teen Wolf in the next episode!

Until next episode.
