Teen Wolf Review: “De-Void” (Season 3, Episode 22)

As Teen Wolf continues to wind down its third season, the narrative has slowed quite a bit. The second half of this season pulled focus away from Deucalion (Gideon Emery) and his Alpha pack, and landed on Stiles (Dylan O'Brien) - an unfortunate side effect of the sacrifice he made to save his father from Ms. Blake (Haley Webb) and her revenge plot. Stiles has been a central character in the story all along, but has suddenly found himself the center of attention, and in the worst possible way. The Nogitsune that has possessed him has taken over his life, and things are about to get even weirder.

Teen Wolf used this character driven episode to showcase the evolution of the relationships over the past three seasons. The bond between Scott (Tyler Posey) and Stiles has always existed but it’s not until Lydia (Hollan Roden) points it out though that the additional connection between them is established. Scott is a true Alpha, which is an abnormality in the supernatural world. It doesn’t happen often so it makes sense that his pack would also follow this trend.

If Stiles is a member of his pack, it would stand to reason that he’s not the only non-werewolf initiate. Aside from Isaac (Daniel Sharman), the twins (err, at least for now), and Derek (Tyler Hoechlin), it wouldn’t be far fetched to consider Lydia and even Allison (Crystal Reed) among them as well. Scott has been an advocate for them all working together for the common good, and he has been at the helm of the group this entire time – even when Derek was technically the leader.

As interesting as Scott’s ability to use the pack mentality to his advantage, and as beneficial as it was to separate Stiles from the Nogitsune, Stiles isn’t the only interesting supernatural at his disposal. We haven’t really seen where Lydia’s banshee storyline is going yet. She’s been traumatized enough over the course of the series to make her a continued threat to the stability of the pack, but her unique gifts also make her an asset. Not having fully explored the mythology behind her banshee talents, it’s a bit of a mystery what the Nogitsune wants with her. All we know at this point is that he does, and that he is fully mobile.

Do you think there are caveats to Stiles separation from the Nogitsune? Will the characters effected by the mind-altering flies recover back to their former self? What truth was Stiles talking about concerning why Scott’s father really left? Let us know all your Teen Wolf theories and what you want to see happen next week on the penultimate episode in the comments section below!
