‘The Crowded Room’ trailer earns Tom Holland comparisons to the Joker

He won't be doing much laughing in this show, though.

The trailer for upcoming Apple TV miniseries The Crowded Room dropped just yesterday, and if Tom Holland doesn’t want to be viewed as Spider-Man for the rest of his life, he’s well on his way to that world. The young actor looks to be capturing psychological distress with disturbing mastery here, and as the streaming service continues to beef itself up with quality original content, The Crowded Room could end up being one of its heaviest hitters.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t look like he’s escaped the comic book world just yet, as one still from yesterday’s trailer has Twitter putting him side-by-side with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.

Indeed, anyone familiar with Todd Phillips’ Best Picture nominee will almost instantly draw a comparison in the above photo especially, which could be mistaken for a scene of Arthur Fleck and Zazie Beetz’s Sophie Dumond with a quick glance.

Of course, as one of the most polarizing movies of the modern era, the Joker comparisons aren’t necessarily the biggest favor The Crowded Room could receive.

Based on the 1981 non-fiction novel The Minds of Billy Milligan, The Crowded Room stars Tom Holland as Danny Sullivan, a young boy who becomes the prime suspect in a heinous crime that he seems to have very little memory of committing. With the help, albeit seemingly unwanted, of investigator Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried), Danny recounts his life story up to and including the incident in question, filling in the gaps and hopefully coming across some key info that could win him his freedom.

The first three episodes of The Crowded Room will release on Apple TV Plus on June 9, with the remaining seven episodes releasing weekly until July 28.
