The iconic waterfront of Liverpool has been overhauled into a stand-in for 1960s Washington D.C. And we have the photos to prove it.
As filming on The Crown season 3 continues, the Three Graces and other famous areas of Liverpool played host to Netflix’s world-famous (and über-popular) regal drama earlier this week, when the Liverpool Echo was on hand to capture snaps of numerous cast members dressed in period garb.
Embedded below, the gallery is more of a general overview of The Crown‘s set, and if there was ever any doubt that Netflix’s premier drama is among the most expensive TV shows in history, let this be evidence of the massive production budget, as you’ll see a number of vintage 1960s American cars lining the streets. What’s more, nearby storefronts were transformed into retro-inspired nooks and crannies, while another building is branded as the Washington Post.
That’s not all that surprising, either, as seasons 3 and 4 of The Crown are expected to chronicle the monarch’s rule between the ’60s and ’70s, when Queen Elizabeth II paid a visit to Washington D.C. And while we’ve grown accustomed to Claire Foy in the lead role, season 3 finds the supremely talented Olivia Colman as Elizabeth. Elsewhere on the impressive cast sheet, former Harry Potter star Helena Bonham Carter has been cast as her on-screen sister, Princess Margaret.
By her side is Ben Daniels as Margaret’s then-husband Antony Armstrong-Jones, and we understand the rocky marriage of Margaret and Lord Snowdon, which eventually led to their split in 1978, will form a pillar of The Crown season 3 when it returns to the airwaves sometime next year.
Still no word of a potential release window, so in the meantime, today’s fresh crop of set photos will have to sate your appetite for the Royal Family.
