When it comes to The Defenders and that fabled second season, Charlie Cox is as much in the dark as you and I. Which is to say that he has “no idea” about the show’s future… or lack thereof.
Asked if the powers of Harlem and Hell’s Kitchen will ever cross paths again further down the road, Cox confessed that he knows diddly-squat about The Defenders season 2, which, if nothing else, echoes those comments made by Marvel Television last month when it was confirmed that, at least for the time being, the street-level heroes of Netflix will be tending to their own standalone series for the foreseeable future.
Case in point: we’re only six months (and change) into 2018, and already we’ve received new installments of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. A third season of Daredevil is also on the cards, though Charlie Cox recently poured ice-cold water over any and all Defenders rumors while chatting to Collider.
I have no idea about Defenders. I know that I had a great time doing the first season and I love those guys and I love the work that we did and I love all of their shows. I see the other guys in the corridors, I’m filming the last season, the last episodes of Daredevil, let’s say, and there’s Krysten [Ritter] starting up season whatever of Jessica Jones and Finn [Jones] lives in my building now. The other day, I went down to get in the van to go to work and the driver’s there and [he stares at me and] I look at this guy and I realize I’ve never met this guy before in my life and he’s waiting for Finn, not me. I feel very proud, it’s very cool.
And while secrecy and misdirection is very much part of Marvel’s M.O., the British actor stressed that he really isn’t privy to any of the information swirling inside Marvel Television, and refuses to speculate on the situation.
I hate to kind of shut down so many of these, I’m really asked to not speculate on this stuff, so I really have no idea if they’re thinking about it. Honestly, I don’t. When it comes to information about the show and characters and future seasons and, the question that everyone loves to ask, is am I ever gonna be in one of the movies…in general, most of the time, I know nothing, and very wisely, they tell me nothing. Even if I do, it’s kind of difficult, because just to even speculate about it in a public forum, then it becomes something that people talks about, and, very quickly, that becomes the word of god.
The Man Without Fear is expected to stage his return later this year for Daredevil season 3, where it will presumably share its release corridor with the leaner second season of Marvel’s Iron Fist. And The Defenders? It’s looking increasingly likely that the eight-part Netflix miniseries will be remembered as a flash in the pan.
