CBS has formally called time on acclaimed legal drama The Good Wife, with the series now set to end in May with a seventh and final season.

News first broke during the Super Bowl, when the network aired a promo championing The Good Wife‘s return later this year with “the final nine episodes” in Alicia Florrick’s saga. Indeed, the announcement should come as no surprise for those who have kept up with CBS’ series, particularly after Showrunners Robert and Michelle King confirmed plans to move on from the show once season 7 was a wrap.

And though reports claimed that CBS was open to continuing the TGW beyond 2016, Network President Glenn Geller released the following statement in tandem with the cancellation.

“It’s never easy to say goodbye to one of the crown jewels of your network and studio, much less to a show that is among the best on television,” he said. “But it also feels very right to end with the seven-year story its creators envisioned, and to celebrate the show’s final run while at the top of its creative game.”

Robert an Michelle King, meanwhile, expressed their own pride in The Good Wife via Twitter, and why now is perhaps the perfect time to close the book on the show.

“Telling the story of the Education of Alicia Florrick is the creative dream of a lifetime. It was always our plan to tell it over 7 seasons. We wanted the story to have a beginning, middle, and an end — that’s the only way actions can have real consequences — and it’s the reason we had episode titles count up from one word to four, then back down again (it would have been pretty embarrassing if we were cancelled in our fifth season).”

Returning in the title role for one final season is actress Julianna Margulies, with The Good Wife now set to return for one last run when season 7 premieres on Sunday, May 8 at 9/8c.
