Once June’s The Flash reboots the DC timeline, transforming the old-school DCEU into the shiny new DCU forever more, the era of the Snyderverse will officially be over. For the past decade, the franchise that began with 2013’s Man of Steel has limped on with ever-looser continuity, but the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs of DC Studios has ensured the slate is finally being wiped clean. And it turns out that dedication to destroying the Snyderverse is even spreading to the MCU.
As Marvel fans may be aware, Daredevil: Born Again recently shocked the internet with the news that a major character from the original Netflix series is being recast for the incoming Disney Plus revival. Namely, Sandrine Holt is taking over as Vanessa Fisk, the wife of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, a role previously played by Ayelet Zurer in seasons 1 and 2 of the original Daredevil run. It just so happens that Zurer is also a DC veteran, too, having played the part of Lara, Kal-El’s mother, in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.
Obviously, Zurer’s connection to the Snyderverse has nothing to do with the reason she won’t be back for Born Again — it’s believed that it’s all simply a matter of scheduling conflicts and not part of a sinister plot from the studio to reboot everyone outside of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk. However, the timing of this announcement is certainly unfortunate as it seems like every Snyderverse alum is being removed from the superhero sphere across the board.
First, Henry Cavill’s Black Adam return was embarrassingly reversed, then Jason Momoa was apparently switching Aquaman for Lobo, Ben Affleck’s definitely out as the DCU’s main Batman… The only ones with potential staying power are Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and, oddly enough, Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen. Oh, and anyone from the Suicide Squad side of things, thanks to Gunn’s affection for Task Force X.
It’s certainly just a coincidence, but it may feel to DCEU devotees that both James Gunn and Kevin Feige are determined to remove all traces of the Snyderverse from the entire Marvel/DC multiverse.
