Secret Invasion billed itself as delving into the MCU’s murkier corners. Nick Fury’s world is one of backstabbing, betrayals, and blackmail – with the most recent episode showing he’s not above holding a child at gunpoint to get what he wants.
So far, Secret Invasion has been restrained when it comes to action. There’s been a big explosion and a couple of hand-to-hand fights, but the best scenes are the heavyweight cast trading barbs with one another over coffee. This is theoretically what MCU fans have been crying out for, but once again there are some who wish Secret Invasion was wall-to-wall cape action.
The real moral here is that a large group of MCU fans (and to be honest, just fans in general) have unhappiness baked into their DNA. Give them what they demand and they’ll hate it. Serve them the opposite and they’ll get even angrier. The best course of action is to focus on making a good show or movie rather, than pandering to what they studio thinks the internet wants (a lesson Warner Bros. should take to heart asap).
Fortunately, Secret Invasion is pretty great, and if the teases of Gravik’s team getting upgraded to Super Skrull status pan out, we may get the blockbusting superhero action sequences that fans are crying out for.
In the meantime, I’m just happy to watch Samuel L. Jackson sit in a variety of stylish London bars showing off some even more stylish turtlenecks.
