The countdown to season 5 of The Vampire Diaries is winding down and The CW has just released all-new character posters to help get us through the last few weeks of TVD withdrawal.

Although the eight posters vaguely resemble something you might find in a high school yearbook – plain background, no props, nothing particularly flashy – it’s nice to see familiar faces back in Mystic Falls. The bulk of the characters recently graduated and are heading to college in the fall, but not before hosting a homecoming welcome for many of our favorites who have been a little scarce as of late.

Tyler (Michael Trevino), who’s been running and hiding from Klaus (Joseph Morgan) for the tail-end of season 4, is coming home with the Original’s blessing. Matt (Zach Roerig) has been off seeing the world with Rebekah (Claire Holt) in a very AladdinWhole New World‘ kind of way, and is returning to his old stomping grounds. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) was dead, and now he’s not, thanks to Bonnie (Kat Graham) – who is now dead – and her witch talents. And, it’s probably a safe bet to assume that at leat someone will be happy to see Silas (Paul Wesley) – but only because they think he’s Stefan (also Wesley).

We’re in for a wild ride when The Vampire Diaries returns to a television screen near you on October 3. No Originals, a human Katherine (Nina Dobrev), Silas in the flesh, and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (also Dobrev) finally exploring the idea of a relationship without that annoying sire bond to complicate matters. As long as Stefan doesn’t have to spend the entire season underwater, season 5 of The Vampire Diaries might be the best one yet.

Check out the latest promo posters from The Vampire Diaries below and let us know which character you’re most excited to see return in the comment section!
