In the meantime, Stefan is occupying his time with self-loathing and broodiness. He seems to be taking a page out of Damon’s book and bought a one-way ticket to the drinking solo train. If Rebekah (Claire Holt) hadn’t have captured Elena like an uneven match of capture the flag, Stefan may have been content drinking the Mystic Grill’s entire liquor stock. After how this episode turned out he might still consider that a distinct possibility. The eternal heartbreak is bad, we all get it, but I can’t get over how it’s even possible for him to still hate Damon. Not that Damon’s perfect by any means, but Stefan hasn’t exactly lived a charmed life either. If he can’t handle the truth than he should stop asking for it.
The greatest part of this episode was the return of Rebekah. It’s about time that a character could make an actual decision. If ratings are tied to indecision than The Vampire Diaries is always guaranteed a solid night. Rebekah wants to find the cure. She is ready to do whatever it takes to take back her life and if that means compelling three vampires to have a game of truth and dare to find out what’s really going on, I applaud her.
Rebekah has quite frequently drawn the short straw. Starting the moment her father stabbed her and her mother turned her into a vampire, all the way through the last time we saw her when her honesty was rewarded with a dagger in the chest from her brother. Now that she has woken up from her coffin nap, she seems to be finally forming an actual plan and ready to stop flailing around like a fish on dry land. It was also an excellent change of pace from the main priority of every episode this season being the Damon-Elena-Stefan love triangle. Arguably, that was still an important part of the episode, but Rebekah managed to include it without making it feel like a game of ping-pong. She basically called Stefan out and said Elena is in love with Damon, live with it.
In reality, Stefan is probably more mad at himself than he is at either Damon or Elena. Elena gave a completely honest assessment of what their relationship has turned into. The domino effect of him letting Elena die which resulted in her new vampire lifestyle led him to disregarding her in a lot of senses and more than anything he’s done before, pushed her straight into Damon. Elena may have been the only one unwillingly willing to admit that she wasn’t in love with Stefan anymore, but the truth is that Stefan doesn’t love vampire Elena nearly as much as he loved her pre-transition.
There’s a lot of other things happening on the peripheral in this episode that may turn into something more. Jeremy’s vampire hunter training is progressing at “Camp Nowhere.” With Klaus’s new influence and Damon’s new push to speed up the process, it’s hard to tell how things will turn out. I can’t imagine it’s going to end well for Jeremy though. He may definitely be headed for the crazy train like Alaric. Bonnie has her doubts about the new magic she’s learned from Professor Shane, but she’s still stuck in the land of the naive about his real purpose. And, we still have April who is turning into even more of an odd-ball by the episode. It’s hard to get a real read on her. I’ll chop it up the grief and a desperate need for friends, preferably not of the supernatural persuasion, for now. She isn’t entirely wrong when she speaks to the council though – everyone needs to start telling the truth. Let’s see how the truth works out.
Last thought, I think it’s safe to say that we might finally get a break from the Elena relationship drama and get to enjoy her being with Damon for at least a few episodes. All bets are off once she becomes a human again.
