The Vampire Diaries Review: “500 Years Of Solitude” (Season 5, Episode 11)

The Vampire Diaries celebrated its 100th episode last night with 500 Years of Solitude and really knocked it out of the park - until the last five minutes when the show made the most predictable move possible. This episode was an opportunity to send Katherine (Nina Dobrev) out on a high note, close this chapter in The Vampire Diaries history, and move forward with a clean slate. Instead, the writers chose in typical melodrama fashion to suck this storyline dry, and then some.

The perks of Bonnie’s new job also gave this episode of The Vampire Diaries a little more of a celebratory feeling (and made Jeremy and his ghost-seeing abilities slightly less creepy), serving as a nice segue to bringing back some familiar faces. Back for this landmark episode for one scene only were Vicki (Kayla Ewell) and Alaric (Matt Davis). And courtesy of Damon, Jenna (Sara Canning), John (David Anders), and Elijah (Daniel Gillies).

Ghosts weren’t the only ones making a return appearance, we also got to see the much anticipated reunion between Caroline (Candice Accola) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan). And, along with that Rebekah (Claire Holt) popped in to save Matt (Zack Roerig) once again, and left him with a parting gift – Tyler (Michael Trevino).

Although seeing all these former stars of The Vampire Diaries together on screen again was a treat all the way around, the highlight of this episode was definitely Klaus returning to Mystic Falls. My biggest apprehension about Klaus going off on his own tangent in The Originals was that any chance that he and Caroline had at being a couple was essentially over. Even though they left things on a happier note at graduation, Caroline didn’t hesitate to give him a piece of her mind when he walked (err, wooshed) back into the picture – before she gave him a piece of something else.

Klaus promised to leave and never come back, but I’m still crossing my fingers that Caroline eventually decides to go after him. With Tyler back in town it does complicate the situation, yet I can’t imagine that Caroline will be welcoming him back with open arms.

Has your hope for Klaroline been reignited? Were your relieved to see Katherine survive one more episode? How long do you think it will be before the Salvatore brothers save the day (again)?
