Jason, tired of fangers after discovering the truth behind Warlow, runs away from the rest of the group, hitching a ride with a strange man heading into Bon Temps. However, he discovers that the driver himself is Warlow’s spirit, vanishing just in time to leave Jason trapped in a car running towards a tree. Again, more questions are raised by this turn of events than are answered. How does this spirit have so much power that it can materialize an actual car out of nowhere? The Warlow subplot is still underdeveloped, but hopefully the rest of the season can shed some light on this mystery.
Elsewhere, Alcide has become pack leader, and his new power leads him to have a threesome. Yup, that’s the extent of Alcide’s role in this premiere. In more exciting news, the governor of Louisiana has declared a curfew for vampires and called for all vampire-run businesses to be shut down until they can act more civilized, meaning more Tru Blood must be made. Later, he strikes a deal with the company that makes Tru Blood, giving them a facility to create the drink in free of charge so that he can gain some popularity and cash in hopes of re-election. Nothing sinister there, right?
Meanwhile, Bill summons Jessica to come to him, albeit painfully. Sookie follows her to Bill’s, bringing along Eric and Nora should Bill try to hurt anyone. Upon finding him waiting for them, Sookie, Eric and Nora all attack. Billith shrugs off the hits, even pulling a stake through his chest without exploding into chunks of bloody Spam. Despite his power, he wishes only to talk to the group, letting them know that he is not fully sure what has happened to him, but they would do well to leave him and Jessica alone. Jess takes his side, angry that the group tried to kill Bill (yeah, expect more of these jokes throughout the season). Later that night, Bill is accosted by multiple visions of Lilith, who all rush into his body
Of course, the episode ends there, leaving us to wait for answers in next week’s episode, which will more likely than not just present more questions. In typical fashion, this True Blood premiere has left fans scratching their heads, but what’s a show without some good mysteries? As fantastic as it feels just to be back in Bon Temps with our favorite characters, there’s a feeling that True Blood is running out of steam. None of the issues presented seem especially pressing, as Bill is mostly in control of himself, the new governor character doesn’t seem too insidious (yet), and the werewolves aren’t really up to much.
But still, the usual flair is there, and fans of the series will just be glad to have the whole gang back together. Sadly, this season has been cut to ten episodes, so whatever plotlines emerge are going to have a restricted amount of time to tie themselves up. Were you happy with this True Blood premiere? Which direction do you think this season will take? Let us know in the comments below and be sure to check back next week for our next review!
