The entire human civilization remembers exactly where they were the moment HBO dropped post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us for our viewing pleasure. Over the next several weeks, the widely popular project quickly became one of the hottest series in all of television. Then again, when you acquire the acting brilliance of both Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, it hardly comes as a surprise that apocalyptic die-hards are waiting with bated breath for the show’s second season. But with the latest update provided to us, it seems we’ll have to wait longer than we thought.

While chatting with Deadline, Francesca Orsi, the head of drama at HBO, revealed that several shows are currently on hold due to the WGA strike happening across Hollywood at the moment. Among those HBO shows, The Last of Us was near the top of the list, with Orsi providing an update that will likely break plenty of fans’ hearts. Orsi said:

“We were looking at The Last Of Us for some time in 2025.”

Following season one ending on a heart-stopping cliffhanger, HBO subscribers were convinced the show would make an emphatic return in 2024. However, with the writers’ strike recently forcing all pencils to be placed down as a sea of talented Hollywood writers strive for fair wages, the beloved series returning in 2025 now seems to be the clear goal.

And while the wait might seem miserably long, fans can still venture backward and enjoy the captivating first season — which is available to stream on Max now.
