Daredevil: Born Again is currently shooting, with the hotly anticipated 18-episode show expected to be the jewel in the 2024 Disney Plus lineup. As with all ongoing Marvel Studios’ shoots, it’s in danger of being affected by the writers’ strike, though scripts seem to have been completed for a while, and so far there’s been no delays.
One of the stickier factors with this show is exactly how it’s connected to the Netflix Daredevil. At first glance, you’d think it’s simply the fourth season by another name, with Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio returning, and a promise to maintain the same style. In actuality, it’ll be a soft reboot for the title hero to properly ease him into the wider MCU.
It seems that early on, D’Onofrio didn’t get the memo, and in 2021 interviews was adamant that his Kingpin is “the same person” as on Netflix. Now, after working on the show for a few weeks he’s seemingly changed his tune, as he revealed to ComicBook.
“I think it’s definitely a new show. It’s not the Netflix show. It’s definitely a new show.”
Though he wouldn’t be drawn on specifics, D’Onofrio he did offer an insight into getting back in the groove.
“I mean, all I can say is that Charlie [Cox] and I are not bored. We are having a great time. We have a great cast, and I think everybody else is having a great time too. Charlie’s one of my favorite people, and I know that he comes here every day ready to knock it out of the park and you know how I am, I’m totally into this part, so I’m there for the same reason.”
Then he returned to underlining that Born Again is a fresh start for the character:
“We’re really just delivering. It’s a lot of work. Charlie’s amazing because he has to do all the stunts and stuff, so he’s in constant training and learning different things. But the scenes are great. I’m trying to skirt around specifics, but I can only say that it is a different show and it feels like a different show.”
Netflix’s Daredevil was so good we’d be sad to see all that character development wiped away, though we can also see the attraction of working from a clean (well, cleanish) slate. Here’s hoping that the writers’ strike doesn’t impact the show too much and production continues smoothly.
Daredevil: Born Again is expected to land on Disney Plus in Spring 2024.
