Vincent D’Onofrio Says Wilson Fisk’s Role In Daredevil Season 3 Will “Blow Fans Away”

Though he only appeared in a few episodes, Daredevil season 2 set up a very interesting story for Wilson Fisk that will now unfold in season 3. Daredevil's nemesis rose to the top of the pile in prison and even had a tense confrontation with Matt Murdock. Production on season 3 is currently ongoing, but thanks to things being kept under tight wraps, we don’t know much about where the next run will take the characters of the Marvel series just yet. While chatting with Collider, however, Vincent D’Onofrio was on hand to tease Fisk’s return and how his villain is always “evolving.”

“It’s hard to top the first season, with Steven DeKnight’s writing, but Erik Oleson (the new showrunner) is a very good writer. I’ve shot some pretty cool scenes, so far. It’s different, but it’s very Fisk. It’s still very emotional. The character is evolving. His whole deal is based on emotion, so we’re taking him down that role further.”

“There are new focuses and new goals. That’s all I can say. If it was up to me, I would go on and on and on about it because it’s so interesting, but it’s so important to them, for us to keep our mouths shut.”

Of course, despite his eagerness to talk about it, D’Onofrio knows better than to blab about the twists and turns of the new season. Still, he did reveal that Fisk’s arc across the run is going to “blow fans away,” as things that “people have been waiting for” will finally happen. Could this mean that the character will become the Kingpin from the comics?

“I can only say that we’re doing things that are just going to blow the fans away. We’ve already shot some things that are just going to be neat for the fans. There’s some awesome things that are very much in the history of Fisk and Daredevil, that people have been waiting for. We’ve already put some of that stuff in the can, and there’s a lot more to do. I think they’re gonna be very happy.”

But how long will D’Onofrio play the iconic villain for? The actor explained that he promised Marvel Television’s team that he would always return to Daredevil whenever they need him. However, there is an end date for the character in mind, which D’Onofrio remained tight-lipped about.

“I have a standing agreement with [Marvel Television president] Jeph Loeb. We made a deal, before the first season, that I could come in and out of the show. We made an agreement that we would give each other a head’s up, throughout the years, so they’d know my availability. So, we picked a particular amount of time that he would give me the heads up on, if they needed me to come in. That particular amount of time, I won’t tell you, but that’s the agreement that we have.”

Daredevil season 3 is expected to be a loose adaptation of classic comic book storyline “Born Again,” as it follows on from Matt Murdock’s near-death at the end of The Defenders. It will be available to stream at some point in 2018.
