The Walking Dead Season 9 Finale Synopsis Teases An Overwhelming Loss

The Walking Dead has only two weeks left to go on its ninth season, following a seriously bleak episode last Sunday. The Walking Dead has only two weeks left to go on its ninth season, following a seriously bleak episode last Sunday. The penultimate outing, “The Calm Before,” sounded like it might take the pressure off for the survivors a bit as they enjoy Ezekiel’s fair that’ll bring the communities together, but the synopsis for the finale reveals that things won’t go as smooth as the king would hope.

In fact, it sounds like the whole thing ends in tragedy, as the description for the finale, titled “The Storm” (see what they did there?), reveals that the assembled communities will have to deal with an “overwhelming loss.”

“In the aftermath of an overwhelming loss, the communities must brave a ferocious blizzard; as one group deals with an enemy from within, another is forced to make a life or death decision.”

Comic books fans will surely know what’s what here. In Robert Kirkman’s source material, the Whisperers hijack the fair and wipe out a number of our heroes, gruesomely displaying their severed, reanimated heads on pikes as a warning to the others to back off their territory. This synopsis heavily suggests the show will retain that key twist, but the only question now is: will the same characters that died in the comics die on screen?

Time will tell, but the synopsis confirms that the finale will see the survivors tackle a more natural enemy alongside Alpha’s group – a vicious winter storm. Weather problems have often been explored on the page, but the TV series has always avoided what would likely be a costly storyline. However, going into season 10 of The Walking Dead, it seems the producers have found a way to make it work.
