The Walking Dead panel at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday saw the release of the first trailer for the upcoming ninth season of AMC’s hit zombie drama. The epic 5-minute promo teased lots of exciting stuff to come as it was, but it’s also worth paying close attention to background details for more hints about what’s in store for us.

For example, a quick shot from from the trailer heavily suggests that Carol and Ezekiel will develop a romantic bond over the next season. With Rick in the foreground, the screenshot sees the former sheriff looking back at a happy scene of his friends camping in the woods. In particular, it looks like the Kingdom monarch and Carol are snuggling up together.

See for yourself below:

Ezekiel was introduced in season 8 and immediately attempted to woo Carol, which made for an odd couple pairing as the theatrical king has such a different personality than the stoic, hardened Mrs. Peletier. However, they formed a connection nonetheless and it makes sense that given some time, the pair would enter into a relationship.

And time they’ve had, as we know that season 9 will echo the time jump at this point in the storyline in the comics. As also teased in the trailer, it’s been a while since Negan and the Saviors were defeated and since then, Rick’s helped turn the fortunes of the allied communities around, as they’ve built some kind of peaceful, if rudimentary, civilization again.

That said, things won’t be all rosy this season, as the trailer reminded us that Daryl and Maggie have rallied against Rick as they disagree with his decision to show Negan mercy. Seeing as there’s a civil war brewing, then, it’s nice to know that at least two characters will find some happiness when The Walking Dead returns for its ninth season on October 7th.
