‘We can’t afford rent out here, man’: Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘gross’ new streaming series is roasted for one big reason

The show isn't even out yet, but the backlash is actually understandable.

Almost worthy of becoming a real-life Tony Stark, the upcoming extravaganza MAX series Downey’s Dream Cars sees Robert Downey Jr. introducing his plethora of luxury cars for all the world to see, and perhaps it shouldn’t.

As the highest-paid actor in Hollywood in 2015, it comes off as no surprise that Robert Downey Jr.’s lengthy and highly successful acting career led the actor to become one of the wealthiest actors in the industry. While everyone seems to be accepting the fact that A-listers are undeniably at the epicenter of wealth in the entertainment hierarchy, it’s the concept behind Downey Jr.’s upcoming series that has fans hitting the brakes, as the actor flaunts his jaw-dropping collection of luxurious rides.

Slated to premiere in June, the series will introduce the world to the large collection of luxury cars under the actor’s name, where he explicitly shares their value and showcases all of their machinery assets. While no one is exactly against Downey Jr. owning the ginormous arsenal of cars, many have pointed out that the existence of a show where the entire purpose is to flaunt his wealth is just entirely unnecessary — especially when his audience is already struggling to accept the harsh economical reality they’re currently living in.

Moreover, fans couldn’t help but notice the stark contrast between Robert Downey Jr. and his Avengers co-star Jeremy Renner. While Downey Jr. is revving up his engines to showcase his luxury cars, Renner is on a completely different wavelength with his reality TV series, Rennervations, which seeks to provide a new home for the community. Even though it is entirely fair that Downey Jr. isn’t necessarily passionate about home renovation, the divergence of concepts on their shows is actually astonishing.

Only time will tell if the series will prove to be as successful as MAX intends it to be, but from the public’s reception alone, it may take a bit more than a few shiny cars to really impress people.
