The mere existence of Rotten Tomatoes is enough to generate debate, with the divide between critical scores and audience approval ratings often separated by a chasm, as Tom Holland has discovered recently following the polarizing response to Apple TV series The Crowded Room.
At tone point, the episodic psychological drama was the worst-reviewed project of his entire career on the aggregation site, but has since moved up to a still-disappointing 26 percent. On the other side of the coin, a 94 percent user rating showcases that his supporters have been more than willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
In fact, he made a point of thanking them in a recent appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, where he acknowledged that The Crowded Room hadn’t exactly set the critical sphere alight.
“It’s so funny. Obviously, The Crowded Room came out. We didn’t have very favorable reviews. So the press story was that I have taken this year off because of the reviews. But I’m eight months into my year off. I’ve been chilling at home in London, going to Grand Prixes, playing golf…I would like to say a massive thank you to my fans, and the people that have seen the show because we’re at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. I feel so grateful that I have a wonderful community of people that support me and are there for me, so I’m honored and really excited for the rest of the show to come out.”
The last thing Holland needed was another widely-trashed offering on his filmography given his recent struggles outside of the MCU, but he can always sleep soundly knowing that those who’ve been following his career will always have his back.
