This Sunday, HBO’s Westworld will finally put an end to what’s truly been an incredible season of television with a super-sized 90 minute episode. Through all the stunning performances, jaw dropping twists and deep and layered plot threads sprinkled throughout, it’s been a wild, wild ride, one that we’re kind of sad to see come to a close. But fear not, dear reader, for there is much more to come.
That’s according to Evan Rachel Wood, who plays Dolores on the show. In a recent interview with Indiewire, the same one in which she said that the finale will make you “get up and clap,” the actress revealed that Westworld is only going to “really start” next season:
I know a little about what’s coming in Season 2. I know how our ending for Season 1 will segue into Season 2 and… wow. [laughs] That’s all I can say. I think it was always that Season 1 was going to be this backstory and set up — getting to know the park and characters. I think Season 2 is really going to be warp speed. The show might really start in Season 2.
Though we’d heard hints of this before, Wood’s comments are certainly exciting. If season 1 truly has been just the set up, then we can’t even imagine what we’re in for when the show returns. It would make sense, too, if this was just the backstory we’ve been seeing. After all, there’s obviously so much more to explore in this world and with these characters and it really does feel as if we’re just at the tip of the iceberg.
Clearly, there’s a much larger story to tell here, and with all of the set up now out of the way, you can expect season 2 to dive headfirst into this fascinating world that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have created. But before that, we need to get through the show’s rookie outing, and while we don’t expect this Sunday’s finale to answer all of our questions, we’re quite alright with that.
After all, Westworld needs to give us at least a couple of reasons to tune in when it returns next year, right?
