Super Bowl LI undoubtedly served up a volley of trailers, but none more intriguing than HBO’s first-look teaser for Westworld season 2.
Set against a slowed-down (and bloody haunting!) rendition of Kayne West’s “Runaway” – we have Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones) to thank for that one – the Powers That Be arguably delivered a near-perfect teaser, as most of season 2’s plot points were left by the wayside in favor of beautiful, sweeping vistas and a voiceover from the vengeful Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), who is about to light the spark on a full-blown revolution.
And with Westworld currently adorning the cover of Entertainment Weekly, today brings forth a smattering of new story clues about the show’s second season, which is said to be an “epic, brutal and trippy” expansion of HBO’s sci-fi flagship. It’ll also dazzle viewers with another labyrinthine plot, after Jeffrey Wright (Bernard Lowe) went so far as to suggest that Westworld season 2 is so breathless – so expansive – that it’ll make the first season look like a “genteel kitchen drama.”
How’s that for a pull-quote? But in order to paint the picture, HBO and EW have now rolled out a series of images for the sophomore installment, and they’re exactly as violent and intriguing as you’d expect.
Beyond that, there’ve been some suggestions that Westworld season 2 will at the very least reference that fabled Samurai park, particularly now that series showrunner Jonathan Nolan, who is back in the driving seat alongside his wife and creative partner Lisa Joy, hinted at a journey “beyond the park.”
We want to feel like the show is rocketing ahead. The first season was a journey inward, this is a journey outward. It’s a search for what else is in the park, and what else is beyond the park.
Westworld season 2 has been penciled in for a premiere on April 22nd. The only question now is, will you be tuning in?
