Season four of Succession will premiered on HBO this week, and unfortunately, this will be the show’s final season. Despite this Emmy Award-winning series receiving so much success and acclaim from fans and critics alike, showrunner Jesse Armstrong believes that ending this show’s story in its fourth season was the right choice.
This decision not only shocked fans but also HBO themselves. HBO and HBO Max content CEO, Casey Bloys revealed in an interview with Variety that there are no plans for a spin-off series since there are hardly any characters where an extended story could be told. He also said that if Armstrong plans to bring back the show one way or another, he would receive support and HBO would help make it happen.

Season four of Succession is said to be the most dramatic conclusion of this HBO series as three of Logan Roy’s children plan to go after their father. The decision to make season four of Succession its last was announced back in February when Armstrong revealed that he wants people to focus on the show rather than worrying about its pending end. He also reassured fans that the finale isn’t a dud and that neither he nor his characters “overstayed their welcome.”
While the showrunner took time to decide if Succession would end with season four or not, he told Variety during the season four premiere that he hoped that someone in the writing team would talk him out of ending the show early. In the end, season four felt like the show’s story was complete and there was no need for it to continue.
“That’s how I pitched it to my writers’ room, kind of hoping I’d get argued out of it so we’d see a way to do more seasons, because I love working with these people. I think there’s a feeling of completeness and rightness to the shape of the show.”
Armstrong also revealed that he had the ending planned out early on and that he hopes that people will enjoy what he came up with as the show slowly comes to an end.
Succession season four will have 10 episodes and will be available to watch on HBO and HBO Max.
