Warner Bros. Discovery’s new one-for-all streaming platform Max – a sort of Pokémon evolution of HBO Max – goes live in the United States on May 23, 2023. The rebranding comes as a direct result of the change in leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery following the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc. that took place in April 2022.
Max will host all of HBO Max’s former catalog along with Discovery programming from the likes of HGTV, the Food Network, TLC, ID, Magnolia Network, and Discovery itself. Discovery Plus, however, in a confusing turn of events, will remain its own independent streaming platform.
What will happen to HBO Max accounts?
With the launch of Max, former HBO Max accounts will simply transfer over to the new platform. In the same way other apps go through updates where features are changed, so will HBO Max, in the process evolving into Max.
Warner Bros. Discovery says most updates on most devices will be automatic, while a small portion of people will have to manually delete their HBO Max app, and download the Max app. Their sign-in details and account subscription will stay the same, however.
If the transition is successful, after the app updates, or after you download the new app and sign in, your billing information, plan, profile, avatar, and even the “Continue Watching” and “My List” features will all be there. According to Variety, WBD has staff in worldwide “war rooms” monitoring the transition to make sure everything goes according to plan.
