‘I was just doing my thing’: Sofia Coppola doesn’t know if the age gap in ‘Lost in Translation’ would have held up today
Sofia Coppola is reflecting on the age gap of the romance in
Lost in Translation
, her Oscar-winning 2003 breakout hit.
The film starred a then 17-year-old Scarlett Johansson and a 52-year-old Bill Murray.
Granted, Johansson's character was in her 20s and the intimacy doesn't go beyond a kiss, but some assert the movie hasn't aged well.
Coppola, who is now 52 herself, said her kids even questioned the 35-year age gap when she watched it with them.
Ultimately, Coppola declined speculating if the film could get made today, brief nude scene and all, saying she was just "doing [her] thing at the time."
Coppola further defended the film: “I think it’s romantic when you have a connection with someone that you can’t be with for so many reasons, but they still see a side of you that maybe someone of your generation doesn’t.”
